Successful 2016 draft for the Wildcats!

2016-06-13

The future is bright in the Valley!

The Valley Jr. A Wildcats were very happy with the MHL Draft on June 11th, making depth trades and moving up to 4th overall. Of the teams’ five top targeted players, the Wildcats left with three of those players and added great depth and long-term potential to the line-up.

“We’re pretty good right now with our overall depth and I think we added some great depth for the next couple years that’s going to allow our club to always be in a great position” said Greenough following the draft.

1st Pick, 4th overall – The Wildcats moved ahead to 4th overall to select Jacob Hudson, trading their 2016 3rd and 4th round and 2017 1st round selections to acquire the pick. Hudson was the consensus number one within the organization, after scouts and management saw his passionate style of play parlay into strong showings both in playoffs and at the QMJHL challenge. Hudson plays an aggressive forechecking game and has developed his offensive tools to bring a full 200 foot game to the Wildcats, as early as next year with a strong summer of development.

1st Territorial – The Wildcats selected Josh Foster as their territorial pick this year, securing the elite forward who was receiving interest around the league after a strong 16 year old season where he was 3rd in team scoring. Foster has an outstanding shot and is a dangerous offensive threat for the midget program, and the scouting staff felt he could translate that very well in the MHL.

2nd Territorial – With the Wildcats compensation for taking one territorial, the organization selected 17 year old defenseman Ben MacDonald of Rothesay Netherwood. The 6’3 180 pound defender is amongst the most dangerous in Atlantic Canada on the powerplay and complements that with a strong physical approach. The Wildcats staff was ecstatic to see MacDonald available in this slot, and feel he could make an impact on the Wildcats blueline for years to come.

6th pick, 6th round - Valley selected 17 year old goaltender Aidan Hosein, who was the play MVP for the NSMMHL champion Steele Subaru Major Midgets. Hosein also broke the record for most shutouts recorded in a season in the NSMMHL with 7 shutouts through the 38 game season. Hosein’s maturity and poise in the crease is admired by Wildcats goaltending coach Jack Hartigan, who lobbied for  his selection due to his outstanding development this year.

8th pick, 6th round – The Wildcats chose Devin Sceles from Moncton, who had a very strong 16 year old season with the Flyers this year with 17 points in 30 games. Sceles brings size, an excellent work ethic, and a mature game to the Wildcats, and these traits will compete for a spot this August at camp.

1st pick, 7th round – The Wildcats selected Joel Bishop, who is coming off an excellent rookie season with the Halifax Mooseheads. Bishop is one of the top players in the 1999 age group in Atlantic Canada, and may provide a year as a premier forward later in his career.

6th pick, 8th round – The Wildcats again looked to secure the rights to a premier 1999 born with the selection of Keenan MacIsaac, who is an offensive defender completing a strong rookie season in Chicoutimi. The Hammonds Plains native is another player who could play as a 20 year old and make a major impact in the Valley.

8th pick, 8th round – Valley selected local defender Austin Woodland of Port Williams, securing one of our top midget players from this past year. Woodland brings size, grit and an honest approach to the blueline with offensive tools developing. The Wildcats were very happy to get a local player of Woodland’s calibre late in the draft.

2nd pick, 9th round – Valley looked locally again selecting forward Zachary Forsythe from the Major Midget program. Forsythe is coming off a strong season where he flashed more offensive tools and a great 200 foot game. Forsythe has long-term potential is he is a multi-sport athlete and the organization felt his game has taken great strides this past year.

The Wildcats also acquired Andrew Dumaresque for 4th and 6th round picks, and completed the Austin Harding trade by acquiring Mitch Baker, Travis Parks and Austin Gough from Yarmouth.
