One step forward, one step back.

That's the theme of the 2016-17 Jr. A Valley Wildcats, as they split two home games this past weekend, notching a 5-1 win over the South Shore Lumberjacks, and then falling 4-3 to the Yarmouth Mariners. It is a frustrating trend.

On Saturday, December 10, the Lumberjacks came to town to face the Wildcats. Despite being outshot 45-24, the Wildcats, led by Justin Ritcey in goal, walked away with a 5-1 win.

Ritcey was at his finest in this game, making several key saves throughout all three periods until the Wildcats began to pull away.

Adam Nolan, Grant Janes, Donovan Rehill, Evan Scott, and Ilya Putintsev all scored for the Wildcats. Samuel Cyr-Ledoux replied for the Lumberjacks.

The Wildcats then prepared to take on the Yarmouth Mariners. The Wildcats and Mariners always put on a good game, and this game was no exception. The Mariners walked away with a tight 4-3 win.

The Wildcats let down their guard for a grand total of five minutes in the second period, but that was all it took. Yarmouth pounced in that five minute span, taking a 4-1 lead as they scored four times in that five minute letdown. The Wildcats recovered, but despite their best efforts, could only narrow the gap to 4-3.

Aaron Maillet, Jordan Messenger, Mateo Short, and Connor Peveril all scored for Yarmouth. Nic Blanchard scored twice, with Donovan Rehill adding the single.

Valley was outshot 47-39 in the game.

Next up for the Wildcats: they visit Truro on December 17, and return home for their last game before the Christmas break as they welcome Summerside on the 18th. Game time is 2:00pm for Sunday's game.
